“On entering division” is the delay logged at the first station of the train's route inside the division; for a train that originates inside it, that is its late start. “Gained / lost” is the difference between that and the current delay — time lost (+) or made up (−) since entry.

Work Out Directions From The Network
Trains passing the same stations in the same order run the same way; in the opposite order, opposite ways. One answer therefore settles every train sharing that route, so a whole division usually takes a handful of questions.
